TDS Refund: How to Check Status & Get It Faster
A TDS refund arises when the total tax deducted at source (from salary, FD interest, professional fees, etc.) exceeds your actual tax liability for the year. You don't apply for it separately — you claim it by filing your ITR. The department verifies, processes, and credits the refund to your bank account, with interest for the delay in many cases.
How a TDS refund works
File your ITR
Report all income and all TDS (matching Form 16/16A with Form 26AS and AIS). The return computes your true liability; any excess TDS becomes your refund claim.
E-verify within 30 days
An unverified return is never processed. Aadhaar OTP verification is fastest.
Department processes the return
The CPC processes your return and issues an intimation (Section 143(1) of the 1961 Act / corresponding provision of the 2025 Act) showing the refund determined.
Refund credited
The amount is credited via ECS/NEFT to your pre-validated bank account on the portal. Interest on delayed refunds is typically added as per the rules.
How to check your refund status
On the e-filing portal
Log in at incometax.gov.in → e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns → check the status of the relevant year. The dedicated Refund/Demand Status service under “Services” shows refund stage and failure reasons.
Check your email and SMS
The department sends intimations and credit confirmations to your registered email/mobile. Also watch for notices asking for a response — an unanswered notice can hold up the refund.
How to get your refund faster
- File early and accurately — July filers generally get processed before the year-end rush.
- E-verify immediately — the processing clock starts at verification, not filing.
- Pre-validate your bank account on the portal before filing, and keep it active — failed credits are the most common delay.
- Match 26AS/AIS with your return — mismatches trigger manual scrutiny and months of delay.
- Respond to notices fast — defective-return or adjustment notices pause everything until you reply.
- Keep your name as per PAN identical in bank records to avoid credit failures.
If your refund is delayed or failed
- “Refund failed / credit failure”: usually a bank-account issue — re-validate the account and raise a refund reissue request on the portal.
- Adjusted against demand: the intimation may show your refund adjusted against an outstanding demand for another year — check the demand details and pay or dispute it.
- Still processing after months: raise a grievance on the portal (e-Nivaran) with your acknowledgement number.
- Wrong bank account closed: update and re-validate a live account, then request reissue.
